Fighting the common cold is something that practically everyone has encountered at some point in his or her life. Those all too familiar symptoms-headache, coughing, sore throat, stuffy nose, itchy and water eyes and muscle aches are enough to make one want to stay in bed. The common cold is an infection of the upper respiratory system infiltrating the mucous membranes of the nose and throat, usually lasting a minimum of seven days.

Often times, along with the approach of cold weather, people tend to armor themselves with various ways to combat the common cold. There are the old home remedies, which certainly bring relief to common cold sufferers. A few of these include grandma’s favorite-homemade chicken soup. There is actually scientific evidence that chicken soup does help. The heat and fumes of the soup help release the mucus in your nose thereby helping your body fight the virus while the soup itself contains cysteines, known to thin mucous.
